COMMUNITY

Go Camping had the pleasure of sponsoring the 2009 Kokoda Challenge which is an annual  96km cross country bushwalking event where teams of 4 people trek through the Gold Coast Hinterland.

The event was designed to reflect the key elements of the Spirit of Kokoda – with 96km representing the actual distance of the Kokoda Track and the 39 hour time limit symbolizing the 39th Militia who were the first of our Australian troops to arrive at Kokoda on 15th July 1942.

The program uses the Spirit of Kokoda to teach the younger generation the value of  ENDURANCE, COURAGE, SACRIFICE and MATESHIP.

Part of the Kokoda Challenge associations goal is to support the Kokoda Community and assist the descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Hence, David, our floor manager had the pleasure to experience the Spirit of Kokoda in itself, travelling to PNG as a youth leader to trek with the kids through the 96km jungle track.

The Kokoda Challenge Youth Program (KCYP) is an experiential learning program offering young people the opportunity to realise their full potential and gain a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Since it's inception five years ago, the KCYP has made a difference in the lives of 115 young people and in 2010 will be expanding to take on 52 young people between the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Tweed Branches.

The length of the program (14 months) combined with the strong physical component and use of the Spirit of Kokoda is proving to be a winning formula.  The fundamental philosophy of the program is about structure, discipline and boundaries, what is referred to as old fashioned values.

Go Camping is very proud to be a supporter of the KCYP. By reaching out and supporting our youth we take a step towards building a better community for all. Go Camping donated funding and the equipment that the 45 Kokoda Kids used for their life changing trip to Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Track.

Go Camping also supports local community organiations, offering our shop front on a regular basis for sausage sizzles and general fund raising. We love the smell of cooking sausages on a Saturday and the opportunity is always there for our local organisations.
